Club History

Nailsea United Football Club was established in 1897, playing its first organised game on 16th October of that year against the Old King Street Club Bristol. In 1899, the Club joined the Clevedon & District League and this was followed by periods in the Weston & District, Bristol & District, and Bristol Church of England Leagues between 1909 and 1946.

The Club played its home fixtures at Nailsea Park and Cricket Field Green in the town, before moving to its current home at the Grove, Nailsea, in 1946. The same year also saw the Club and its Reserve side move into the Bristol & Suburban League. Prior to the construction of the Grove Sports Centre in the early 70’s, the Club’s players changed in what was previously a Golf Pavilion, relocated to the Grove from another site in the town. The Club was also one of the first to install floodlights in the Bristol area, which remained in place at the Grove until the early 1970’s, when they were removed due to a road widening scheme. The 1970’s also saw the Club enjoy a period of significant growth, increasing its number of teams to five and with this came moves to the Somerset County and Weston-Super-Mare & District Leagues, where its sides still compete to this day.

The Club has enjoyed its fair share of success during its long history, primarily winning the Somerset County League Premier Division Championship twice, the Somerset County League KO Cup four times and the Somerset FA Senior KO Cup. The Club’s ‘A’, ‘B’ and Colts sides have regularly won Weston-Super-Mare & District League titles and Cups.

In 2004, the Club embarked on a formal development plan to try to bring its facilities at the Grove up to Western League (step 6) standard. Enclosure of the ground, spectator hard standings and a new changing room block were successfully installed around the Club’s main pitch. The 2007/08 season saw the Club’s first team win the Somerset County League Premier Division Championship by 10 clear points which made them eligible for promotion to the Western League. However, the refusal of the landowner (Nailsea Town Council) and the local planning authority (North Somerset Council) to allow floodlights at the site resulted in the Western League rejecting the Club’s application. Despite this disappointment, the Club continues to avidly look for a new home so that it can realise its Western League entry ambition and thereby provide greater ambition, aspiration and a guaranteed secure future.

Notwithstanding this quest, the Club continues to thrive, grow and diversify, forming a ladies team in 2006 and a Veterans XI in 2009. The Nailsea United Ladies have enjoyed rapid advancement and were promoted from the Somerset County League in 2009 to currently compete in the South West Ladies League. The Club also continues to work very closely with its excellent Junior Club partner, Nailsea Junior Football Club, sharing facilities and providing organised football and a clear development road map for the footballers of Nailsea aged from 6 to 56.

Off the field, Nailsea United Football Club has a vibrant social scene and despite its considerable size, is a friendly, unified and welcoming Club that values the importance of fun as well as performance for all of its players and members, regardless of ability, age or gender.
